Proposal of a Proposal

Group 2: Muhammad Ahmad, Minelie Goma, Petr Lelikov

The main idea is to propose a high speed transportation system in the United States. As of right now, our thought is to create a system that will allow people to quickly travel from an area around New York to an area around Chicago. A suggested name for this type of transportation is “Millennium Transportation”. This high speed transportation system will most likely be above ground because it will eliminate the risk of a tunnel collapsing and blocking the pathway. In order to fix the collapsed tunnel, the entire area of the collapse would have to be excavated. This transportation system will use electromagnets in order to propel the transport forward. Electromagnetic transportation is much faster and smoother than the transportation that uses wheels. This is because the transportation with wheels loses a lot of the energy to friction. The electromagnetic transportation avoids this problem by creating a magnetic levitation, eliminating the friction. One of the biggest challenges that we faced, was choosing what we are going to propose because our ideas always changed. Our last proposal was going to be a new speaker that is made out of many horn-shaped speakers because horn shape is considered to be the best shape for naturally amplifying sound. Since it was hard to decide on our proposal, not much progress have been done. So far, we’ve looked into another high speed transportation system that is known as “Hyperloop”. Hyperloop is a proposed high speed transportation system that also uses magnetic levitation to propel a capsule through low-pressure tubes. Decreasing air pressure in the tubes allows the capsule to travel at higher speeds because reducing the air pressure also reduces the air friction. One of the challenges that we anticipate facing is to where exactly put the stations of these high speed transportation systems. Since we are planning to propose it to be above ground, it is going to be very difficult to put it in the city because of the high structures in the city. It is also not very effective to put it far away from the city, because then, most of the population that is in the city will have to travel far in order to get to these stations. Another challenge is whether to use an electromagnetic suspension(EMS) or an electrodynamic suspension(EDS) for the high speed transportation system. In an electromagnetic suspension, an electromagnetic coil and a magnet is used to create magnetic levitation and propulsion. The main difference between EMS and EDS is that the electrodynamic suspension uses a superconductor that was subjected to cold temperatures. Muhammad will be focusing on the location and the structure of the high speed transportation system. Minelie will be working on the suspensions of the transport and the electromagnetic coils of the track. Petr will be addressing the business aspect of the high speed transportation system(cost, materials and labor-power) as well as the political aspect of it.(laws that prevent a high speed transportations system).
